Tim offers piano lessons to anyone who is keen to learn. His pupils range from children at primary school to retired adults. Tim is happy to accept beginners, more experienced pupils, and adults who wish to rekindle their enthusiasm for music.
Lesson length is by agreement but would normally be 30 minutes for beginners. Tim usually sees pupils weekly during term time, but he is happy to negotiate more flexible arrangements for adults.
Many of Tim’s pupils enjoy the challenges of preparing for and taking ABRSM graded examinations; and they attain excellent results. Tim is also happy to devise alternative programmes to suit those who do not wish to take examinations or to perform publicly. Whatever the scenario, he uses music which appeals to individual tastes.
School Age Learners
Tim is more than happy to teach young people who are keen to learn. Often these pupils feel that they do not wish to take time out of lessons at school in order to learn an instrument.
He takes a patient and encouraging approach, and many pupils have far exceeded their own expectations, and indeed the expectations of their families.
Although Tim does not insist that all pupils study for graded examinations, his pupils have had great success in ABRSM piano, organ, and theory assessments.
Tim has a special interest in working with adult learners. Some of his older pupils are new to musical studies; while others are revivifying an earlier interest.
All adults can benefit from learning an instrument; and many studies have shown that this activity, as well as being a highly enjoyable challenge in itself, helps to improve memory and cognitive function.
“I started playing the piano on my retirement, and have been a pupil of Tim’s since 2014. I am a rather hesitant player, and Tim has been very encouraging and patient. Under Tim’s guidance, I am now working on Grade 5-level pieces and a Chopin Prelude. Our lessons are enjoyable, Tim has a vast wealth of knowledge, gives detailed instructions on how to master music which at first sight seemed impossible, and I always leave full of enthusiasm for next time!”

“Tim is the perfect teacher for adults wanting to learn the piano. He selects pieces that are achievable but not childish and based on the type of music you like. He teaches at your pace, breaking each piece into sections with clear guidance on how to learn the notes, fingering and expression. He seems to know the history of every style of music and makes each lesson enjoyable. I started learning as a complete beginner who couldn’t read music - thanks to Tim, I can now deliver a pretty decent sonata and a great selection of Christmas carols!”
